Groups may choose one of the following add-on workshops to complement their visit to Stepping Stones. Each workshop is fun, interactive and aligned with state and national curriculum standards.
Available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday as part of a Discovery Tour or a Self-guided Group Visit.

Body Basics
Bare Bones
Grades K – 4
No more memorization! Students investigate the skeletal system in an exciting new way through role-play and experimentation. Learn the names, locations, functions and relationships of the bones in the body.
Fit and Safe
Grades K – 4
Remember to stretch! Students work together as they study why their body systems need to stay healthy and learn steps to stay safe in their everyday lives.
Mighty Muscles
Grades K – 4
Did you know that the strongest muscle in the body is the heart? Students identify the major muscles and investigate the three most important jobs their muscles perform.
Nutrition
Fun Foods
Preschool (ages 4 and 5) – Grade K
Students plan a meal and learn what are the best foods to fuel their bodies. They learn the basics about serving sizes as they practice classifying their meals into food groups.
Food Groups
Grades 1 – 2
Learn safe food preparation practices while playing a game of charades with your class. Students learn the basics about serving sizes as they practice sorting and classifying their meals into the food groups. They also investigate how foods help specific parts of their bodies.
Consumer’s Choice
Grades 3 – 4
Students become food-label detectives and search for healthy and not-so-healthy ingredients in common foods. They’ll have fun learning about portion size, recommended daily allowances and the mysterious vocabulary found on food labels.
Animals
Introduction to Rainforest Animals
Preschool (ages 3 and 4)
Investigate cool animals that live in the rainforest and meet a live animal! Learn about the similarities and differences of rainforest animals, how they find their food and where in the layers of the rainforest they make their home.
Animal Adventures
Grades K – 4
What types of animals live in the rainforest? Students will learn about the layers of the rainforest and where different rainforest animals live through investigation, play and an encounter with Madagascan hissing cockroaches.
Animal Classification
Grades 1 – 4
Which animals wear their skeleton on the outside of their bodies? Explore five classes of rainforest animals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, mammals and insects, as they help put mixed-up field notes back in order.
Animal Adaptations
Grades 1 – 4
Sloths have the great adaptation of growing algae on their fur. Find out why as students explore this and other interesting characteristics that help rainforest animals survive in their environment. Students then create their own rainforest animal, complete with adaptations unique to their new creature.
Plants
Rainforest Sprouts
Preschool (ages 4 – 5)
Become botanists! Discover the colorful and interesting plants found in tropical rainforests. Identify, sort and classify the parts of a plant and learn about the important role of a seed.
From Seed to Plant
Grades K – 2
Examine rainforest seeds and fruits, identify the parts of a plant and explore how plants meet their basic needs. Children use role-play, scientific investigation and observation to explore the life cycle and importance of plants.
Plant Identification
Grades 3 – 4
Explore the tropical rainforests using the tools of a botanist. Students investigate and identify rainforest plants using a dichotomous key and discover the many ways that people use plants in their everyday lives.
Weather
The Water Cycle
Grades 1 – 4
Discover the essential role that water plays in our everyday lives. Students explore the steps in the water cycle, experiment with evaporation, condensation and precipitation and learn how water affects the world in which we live.
Weather Wise
Grades 1 – 3
Become meteorologists and learn about the atmosphere. Students investigate different elements of weather, explore tools scientists use to measure weather and create their own weather instrument to use in the classroom.
Energy
Energy at Play
Grades 3 – 4
Did you know that energy can neither be created nor destroyed? Investigate how we collect and use energy and where it goes when we are done with it.
The Paper Cycle
Grades 1 – 4
Explore what it means to reduce, reuse and recycle as students examine, sort and compare products and objects they use everyday. They’ll reuse old paper to create their own homemade paper and discover how conservation can be easy and fun!

Identifying and Adding Coins
Grades 1 – 2
What’s the difference between a nickel and a dime? Students will learn to identify coins and dollar bills through rhymes, games and activities. They will practice skip counting and learn to add the value of a set of coins.
Purchases and Making Change
Grades 1 – 2
Go beyond counting and explore buying and selling, affording something, giving the correct change and adding up mixed sets of coins.

Wants and Needs
Grades 1 – 4
What things do your students want and need? Students will discover goods, services, wants, needs, priorities and budgeting. They will have fun making responsible decisions and determining what they can afford.
Cents for Success
Grades 3 – 4
It all adds up. Through an interactive game, students will earn and spend money and realize they can't always buy what they want.

Introduce science through big book stories! This introductory program creates a connection between stories and the science concepts they present. Hear a story and explore science through fun experiments, artwork and interactive games.

Storybook Theater
Preschool (ages 4 and 5) – grade K
Put on a play with your students! This interactive workshop features storytelling and acting. Children listen to a familiar tale, then use costumes and props to become characters in the play.
